Charcoal Odor

There are many different methods you can use if you need to remove some bad odor. From one of the countless commercial products to dozens of exotic "home made" methods. The simplest and one of the most effective ways to get rid of bad smells though is to use vinegar. Not only is it very effective at removing bad odors, chances are you already have it at home.

The reason vinegar works is because it removes bad "smelly" molecules out of the air, in other words it absorbs the bad odor rather than just covers it up like many of the air fresheners and similar products. Vinegar works best in a closed off space - like a closet or a car's trunk, it works in larger spaces too but would likely take more time to completely remove the smell.

The easiest way to use vinegar to remove bad smells is to pour some white vinegar into a small plate and leave it for a night. The vinegar will absorb bad odors leaving the air clean and fresh. Another popular way to use vinegar is to take a piece of white bread, soak it in vinegar, put it on a plate and leave it for a while. The reason why this method works better is due to the fact that a piece of bread will have larger surface area compared to a vinegar in a plate. More surface area means more interaction with the air which results in larger amount of bad smell removed.

If you know the source of the smell - like cat pee or cigarette smell you can also use a piece of cloth with a bit of vinegar to wipe those areas. This is particularly effective when it comes to removing smoke smell, since it gets "stuck" on furniture, walls, ceiling etc.
